Hand in hand, they have co-created multiple movies together, \u201cthe muses\u201d immersing themselves into a different character created by the same person again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do such seemingly symbiotic relationships look off-screen? Some of these duos have unsurprisingly fallen in love, some of them are close friends\u200a\u2014\u200abut in some cases, a flourishing creative connection doesn\u2019t automatically translate into a harmonious personal one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lars von Trier &amp; Charlotte Gainsbourg<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Collaborations:&nbsp;<\/strong>Antichrist (2009), Melancholia (2011), Nymphomaniac (2013)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_fit_container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nymphomaniac interview 1: Charlotte Gainsbourg\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DWSa5AfvJsU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lars von Trier is arguably one of today\u2019s most controversial directors whose films tend to polarize audiences divided into those cheering and those angrily&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/the_house_that_jack_built_2018\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walking out<\/a>.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>It\u2019s a man who doesn\u2019t want his work to be universally&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cineuropa.org\/en\/interview\/354532\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">loved<\/a>, who was banned from Cannes Film Festival for saying he sympathizes with Hitler, and who was accused of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2017\/10\/bjork-sexual-harassment-lars-von-trier-denial-1201888174\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sexual harassment&nbsp;<\/a>by Bj\u00f6rk. Still, several loyal actors gladly collaborate with Trier over and over again: Willem Dafoe, Udo Kier, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd, John Hurt\u2026 and the unforgettable risk-taker Charlotte Gainsbourg. She was instrumental in creating Trier\u2019s \u201cDepression Trilogy\u201d and interpreted some of his most complex characters, such as a sex addict Joe and a mother grieving her dead child who, consumed by guilt, cuts off her clitoris with scissors.&nbsp;<em>\u201cWhat\u2019s attractive about working with Lars von Trier is actually him. The experience of being directed by him is so special. I\u2019d never expected anything like it, and I would like that experience again. They famously lived in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/celebritynews\/11314419\/Helena-Bonham-Carter-and-Tim-Burton-eccentricty-and-domesticity-dont-mix.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">their own houses<\/a>&nbsp;connected by a tunnel, decorated according to their distinct personal tastes, seeing each other only when they wanted to. Their fruitful professional collaboration started at the same time as their romance: on the set of Planet of the Apes (2001), where Bonham Carter portrayed a monkey. From then onwards, she has become an integral part of Burton\u2019s filmography, notably appearing as Ms. Lovett, baker of human meat pies, in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) and a maniacal Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland (2010). The actress explained that it made perfect sense to cooperate with her husband, as it meant their family remained united.&nbsp;<em>\u201cAnd also, it\u2019s Tim Burton. He\u2019s a genius. Behind the scenes of Kill Bill, things were a bit more complicated. In 2018, Thurman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/03\/opinion\/sunday\/this-is-why-uma-thurman-is-angry.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed<\/a>&nbsp;that Tarantino has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2018\/02\/quentin-tarantino-uma-thurman-harvey-weinstein-kill-bill-car-crash-new-york-times-1202278988\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">choked and spat<\/a>&nbsp;on her in the crucial scenes, which he defended. She has also permanently damaged her knees and neck because she was forced to drive a car even though she deemed it too dangerous, and she crashed into a tree. Nevertheless, Thurman and Tarantino had remained close throughout the controversies to an extent when they were rumored to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/fr\/news\/573776\/uma-thurman-breaks-silence-on-quentin-tarantino-dating-rumors-reveals-their-relationship-status\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dating<\/a>&nbsp;in 2014.&nbsp;<em>\u201cWe\u2019ve had our fights over the years. When you know someone for as long as I\u2019ve known him, 25 years of creative collaboration, yes, did we have some tragedies take place? Sure. But you can\u2019t reduce that type of history and legacy. There is one special leading lady both in his personal and professional life: Greta Gerwig, his partner, an esteemed actress as well as an Oscar-nominated screenwriter. She admitted that she wasn\u2019t thrilled when public viewed her as Baumbach\u2019s muse, especially since she co-wrote their films.&nbsp;<em>\u201cI did not love being called a muse.
