Only two films shined at both shows:&nbsp;<em>Roma<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em>, with more indies climbing all the way to the top even at the Oscars, which meant a fierce competition of big-budget features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The year of Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt6155172\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Roma<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;was a deeply personal, intimate project for the Mexican director Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n who looks back on his\u200a\u2014\u200aoften painful\u200a\u2014\u200achildhood memories.&nbsp;<em>\u201cI think I wanted to understand, to put the pieces together,\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>he explained for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/roma-alfonso-cuaron-netflix-libo-rodriguez-1202988695\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety<\/a>.&nbsp;<em>Roma<\/em>&nbsp;has gathered impressive 173 wins and 168 nominations throughout the award season, and it became the first Mexican winner of the Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. Cuar\u00f3n stood on the stage two more times: as the best director and cinematographer (he actually shot the movie himself!) Moreover,&nbsp;<em>Roma<\/em>&nbsp;was named the Best International Film at the Independent Spirit Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Glenn Close vs. Olivia Colman<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glenn Close is undoubtedly a legend, with a number of unforgettable performances under her belt. Seven of them were Oscar-nominated, including the most recent one in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3750872\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Wife<\/em><\/a><em>,&nbsp;<\/em>where she a played the wife of a Nobel Prize laureate who deserves the glory more than him. Quite unexpectedly, she wasn\u2019t the one whose name was engraved on the statuette for the Actress in a Leading Role. Instead, the visibly <g class=\"gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"9\" data-gr-id=\"9\">shaken,<\/g> moved and surprised Olivia Colman won for her brilliant portrayal of the frail, needy and childish Queen Anne in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt5083738\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Favourite<\/em><\/a>. The British actress has even called her <g class=\"gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"8\" data-gr-id=\"8\">win<\/g> \u201chilarious\u201d! She took over the whole award season with her supporting role in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt7125860\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;with more than 30 wins, including the coveted Academy Award.&nbsp;<em>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em>&nbsp;triumphed at the Independent Spirit Awards as well, with King taking home another award along with the director Barry Jenkins, while the movie was named the Best Feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Moments that made us happy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ecstatic Spike Lee has FINALLY received an Oscar for the adapted screenplay of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt7349662\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>BlacKkKlansman<\/em><\/a>. He literally jumped into the arms of the presenter, his friend Samuel L. Jackson, and made both women and men cry during the speech dedicated to his ancestors, finished with hopeful: \u201cLet\u2019s do the right thing!\u201d He even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2019\/02\/25\/spike-lees-oscars-speech-enraged-trump-watch-read-it-here\/?utm_term=.1e829d3b64d2\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">provoked Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;to post one of his infamous tweets.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_fit_container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;BlacKkKlansman&quot; wins Best Adapted Screenplay\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bIzK9rFkTx0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>Spike Lee caused more than a few tears in the audience with a speech dedicated to his ancestors<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4595882\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Can You Ever Forgive Me?<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>Didn\u2019t turn any nominations into awards at the Oscars, but it did receive the nod for the Best Screenplay (Nicole Holofcener &amp; Jeff Whitty) and Best Supporting Male (Richard E.
