The Hummingbird Project

Director: Kim Nguyen Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård, Salma Hayek

Kim Nguyen, the director of Oscar-nominated War Witch, is back with a thriller The Hummingbird Project. It’s a story that sounds far from exciting on paper: two cousins, Vincent (Eisenberg) and Anton (Skarsgård), are trying to build a fiber-optic cable straight line between Kansas and New Jersey.

Why? It would give them a one-millisecond headstart on stock market quotes. Potential reward? 500 million dollars a year. That is, of course, unless their former boss, ruthless Eva Torres, doesn’t get there first…

Two “gold diggers” — intense Vincent and introverted Anton (forget Skarsgård’s modelesque looks, get ready for a bald patch) — racing against a powerful evil trader portrayed by Salma Hayek — somehow, it looks like one hell of a ride!

Director: Jordan Peele Starring: Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker

Jordan Peele is (thankfully) ready to scare the world once again. After his acclaimed social horror Get Out, which explored the terrors of racism, he has decided to fully delve into a more typical horror narrative. As reported by Collider, this film is about something Peele feels “has become an undeniable truth, and that is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies.” He meant that quite literally: the Wilson family’s vacation is disturbed by four strangers who look exactly like them invading their beach house. “They look like us. They think like us… and they won’t stop until they kill us, or we kill them,” says the mother (Nyong’o). Who are these monsters called The Tethered? And what’s up with all the rabbits and scissors? We will find out soon enough.

The Beach Bum

Director: Harmony Korine Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill, Martin Lawrence

After Spring Breakers (2012), we’re back to Florida with Harmony Korine, this time directing Matthew McConaughey as Moondog, a carefree stoner novelist who “pissed away his talent on women and booze.” According to Indiewire, the often half-naked, constantly drinking and/or peeing McConaughey in a blonde wig wandering around Florida was quite a sight for locals and tourists alike.

As Korine explained for Indiewire, he actually used the actor’s real stoner history when he created Moondog: “I always like playing with the real actor persona, the pop persona, what’s authentic to the person, and then push it out to the stratosphere,” he said. Snoop Dogg’s name is Lingerie, Zac Efron has a hilarious haircut, and Martin Lawrence portrays someone named “Captain Wack” — The Beach Bum sure seems like a properly Korine-an unorthodox comedy.

Gloria Bell

Director: Sebastián Lelio Starring: Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Michael Cera, Sean Astin

“When the world blows up, I hope I go down dancing,” says Gloria (Moore). She’s a mom in her fifties working as an insurance agent during the day who sneaks out to discos by herself at night, searching for love, fun, and joy. “It’s a way to take a lens to an ordinary woman’s life, to really see who she is, and to watch her in all the minutes of her day. To watch her interact with the people that she loves and she cares about. If you were being filmed, you would say, ‘Oh, well, maybe it’s not immense enough for a movie,’ but it is. This is a movie about the enormity of personal experience,” Moore explained for CBS News.

The critics are raving so far (100 % on Rotten Tomatoes, 90 % on Metacritic), so it seems that the director of the Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman Sebastián Lelio made the right call when he remade his own Chilean-Spanish original from 2013.

3 Faces

Director: Jafar Panahi Starring: Behnaz Jafari, Jafar Panahi, Marziyeh Rezaei

Iranian director Jafar Panahi might be banned from making movies and leaving Iran, but that doesn’t stop him not only from shooting, but also dominating film festivals worldwide. 3 Faces is no exception: it was nominated for prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, where Panahi won the Best Screenplay. In his newest feature, the director and his leading lady, Behnaz Jafari, play themselves searching for a young aspiring actress Marziyeh that seems to have killed herself. As Screen Daily reports, the film doesn’t turn into a “nerve-wracking thriller”- especially since both adults don’t believe the girl really committed suicide. Instead, it is a road movie that paints a vivid picture of Iranian villages and their inhabitants set in their ways, subtly exploring misogyny that women like Behnaz or Marziyeh have to endure.
