Weinstein’s Past Has Finally Caught up with Him

Harvey Weinstein, once one of the most powerful men in Hollywood that was both feared and admired, will go to jail. The nerve-wracking trial that uncovered an unbelievable extent of (alleged) sexual assaults and harassment has come to a close. 

Dozens of women, most of them actresses, have painted a picture of Weinstein’s predatory behavior since the journalist Ronan Farrow published his thorough investigation that exposed the movie mogul abusing his position of power. 

He was finally convicted of committing a criminal sex act in the first degree and rape in the third degree. However, he was acquitted of more serious charges including a first-degree rape. His jail time has not been decided yet (could be up to 25 years), and he is facing more charges in another case.

Berlinale Winners Are Out

One of the most prestigious movie festivals in the world, Berlinale, has handed out this year’s awards on Saturday. Check out the full list of winners here – trust us, you’ll have quite a watchlist for this year 🙂 Golden Bear for the best film went to There is No Evil, a film about Iranian executioners that “asks to what extent individual freedom can be expressed under a despotic regime.” The director Mohammad Rasoulof couldn’t even attend due to a travel ban imposed on him by Iranian authorities. Also, South Korea can be proud again just a couple of weeks after Parasite’s huge win at the Oscars – Sang-soo Hong was named the best director for The Woman Who Ran. 

Candyman Is Coming and We’re Already Scared

Ready to be terrified by Jordan Peele, the master of horror, again after Get Out & Us? Trailer for Candyman, “spiritual sequel” of the 1992 classic, is out and considering his reputation, we are too scared to watch it 😀 This time, Peele acted as a co-writer and producer, while Nia DaCosta directed. There’s one crucial thing we still don’t know though – who will play the Candyman? It seems this will remain a secret until the film is out, while many hope that Tony Todd will reprise his role. 

And why did Peele choose this story? “My connection with Candyman is pretty simple,” said Peele. “It was one of the few movies that explored any aspect of the black experience in the horror genre in the ’90s, when I was growing up. It was an iconic example to me of representation in the genre and a movie that inspired me,” he explained. 

  Indiana Jones without Steven Spielberg?!

Impossible to imagine, but it will happen: the director is out of the franchise and it seems that James Mangold will take over. Variety‘s sources say that the deal is not finalized yet, but Spielberg is ready (and eager) to let the new generation take over Indiana Jones.

And Knives Out without Daniel Craig?!

Detective Benoit Blanc, an instant favorite from a crime comedy Knives Out, will be back in a sequel. While the film will have a completely new story and a different cast, Daniel Craig will portray Blanc again. The director Rian Johnson has recently explained that it was a coincidence that he managed to snag brilliant Craig for the role. “It was a very serendipitous moment when the Bond movie pushed three months. They pushed their schedule, so he suddenly had a window open and we got in there right away and he said yes right away, and we were making the movie right away,” he said for In Studio.
